In skiing, as it is in life, there's always somebody around who is spoiling things for everyone with their lack of consideration for others. You don't want to be this person ? apart from anything else, you might get chucked off the slopes! So if you want to continue to enjoy your skiing holiday in safety, follow these tips on ski etiquette.
Don't overestimate your abilities. If you're a beginner, don't try and impress your buddies by heading out on the advanced slopes, when you've only just started to get comfortable on the easier ones.
Stay inside the designated areas. If you want to impress people, ducking under the barrier to go skiing off piste is the wrong way to go about it. Trails are closed off for a reason. Whatever your reasons for wanting to do this, taking on closed trails isn't worth getting chucked off the mountain, and it certainly isn't worth getting hurt or killed.
Even if a gondola car is particularly large, it can still get pretty packed in there at busy times. In these types of situations, it pays to be polite. Whatever you do, don't smoke in the carriage, as not only is this very irritating in an enclosed space, but it is also often against the rules. Also, mind your language and don't carry out conversations of a personal nature.
Don't cut the line for the ski lift. Or any other line for that matter! Although waiting in a queue can get frustrating, it's not half as frustrating as waiting and then having someone jump ahead of you. And if you get caught in the act ? yep you guessed it ? you could be chucked off the slopes.
Don't whiz around on crowded trails. Although you might enjoy racing down the slopes at a hundred miles an hour, it is not always appropriate to do so, and you should be sensitive to this fact. Skiing too fast can make for a warning by the ski patrol, so make sure that you always stay in control and keep your speed in check.
If you've arranged to meet people at a certain time, try your best to keep to that agreement. There are plenty of things that can happen to delay you though, such as long queues, delayed ski lifts, falls, or trails that take longer than you might have anticipated. In case of a delay, call, send a text, or talk to them on a walkie talkie so that you don't cause anyone unnecessary worry.
