Old Budapest is situated on the banks of the Danube River and the city has grown immensely over the centuries. Due to western influence since the turn of the century, the nightlife has become somewhat more mainstream. If, however, you prefer the freedom of a self-catering apartment then you should think of hiring a car. The taxi services and public transport is decent, but if it is freedom of movement you want then a car would not be a bad option. You do not need an expensive rental car to get you around. One thing that you have to keep in mind is drinking and driving. The police are extremely vigilant in Budapest and do not take kindly to people breaking the law. You should also carry your passport on you at all times. This is just in case you need to show ID.

The best time to go to Budapest is in the summer months because winters tend to be quite cold. If you are looking for a white Christmas then winter in Budapest may suit you.
