Elmo's World Part 1
Mercedes Oestermann Van Essen
Look around and you see a world full of negative news. The media is full of disturbing news about the financial markets, global warming, the end of the world approaching in 2012 war and crime, just to mention a few. Maybe a close friend has died or you lost your job, perhaps even your home? Situations and events like these unwittingly reinforce negative beliefs we all hold and produce deep rooted feelings of disturbing insecurity.
Our alarm bells are on red alert and will keep ringing until something happens that convinces us that we have returned to safe normality, whatever that means to each and everyone of us. We can relax, go back to our comfort zones and pretend that these disturbing happenings were just a bad dream and we can carry on as before, until the next time something happens that rocks our boat. Then this entire process in all probability repeats itself. We go into shock, denial, anger, blame desperation until things settle down.
Unfortunately for us the security and safety we seek has a fundamental flaw: It only exists in our mind, because in reality there is no such thing. We equate safety and security with maintaining a pleasurable status quo forever, but this assumption is in direct contradiction to one of the fundamental laws by which the universe operates.
The principle building block of the universe is energy and energy is in constant motion. Therefore we have to accept that any seemingly static state of affairs is just an illusion. An illusion we have created ourselves.
How can this be?
You may have read about how we make up our own realities and how our thinking, be it positive and negative produces exactly what we think about. The much talked about film "The Secret" makes this point, but it only tells half the story. So you may intellectually understood the concept, but these ideas of attracting what we want into our lives are soon forgotten when we are faced with adversity.
Personally I do not hold with the positive thinking brigade and I do not tell my clients to think positively under all circumstances either. In fact quite the opposite. If you are experiencing a trauma, such as loss of a loved one, serious illness and the like in your life the last thing I would expect from you is to be "positive". If you were, a basic human mechanism that plays out in the universe and all of us would be missing: Namely that of duality. However, does this mean you need to feel insecure, destitute or depressed? The answer is a definite "no".
The law of duality dictates that in order to know happiness we must know sadness, in order to enjoy sunlight, we must know darkness. It is the duality experience that enables us to make choices in our lives. This goes for our view of security too. In order to crave security we must know what it feels like to be insecure or be in seemingly unsafe territory.
When you accept this premise you can start viewing many events in your life from an entirely different angle.
Let us stay with our need to feel safe: The first question is where does it emanate from? Answer: From our internal representations of how we view the world, our circumstances and ultimately ourselves. Our Internal representations come in many guises. We are unaware of them and act on them for the most part subconsciously.
The conscious mind only reacts to what it perceives on the surface, literally. Rather like an onion, once you peel off another layer, a new vista appears. As we get deeper into these layers of the mind we find the key to all our core feelings.
How do we get deeper into the mind? What do we do with the information once it surfaces from the deeper levels? And how does this help us deal with feeling unsafe and insecure?
Energy Psychology has many ways of delving into the deeper levels of the mind simultaniously building higher energy levels, which makes you feel better. When we use different modelities like meridian energising and mind focus through visualisation for example, the conscious and subconscious minds relax and are more willing to co-operate. Old patterms and unsuitable beliefs fall away easily, when the conscious mind and subconscious mind have been convinced that it is indeed safe to make changes.
