Effects Of Hard Water
Rachel Yoshida
Have you ever wondered exactly what hard water is and where it comes from? It is explained pretty easily and if you have hard water you may not even know you do, but you do realize that there is something about your water that is not precisely right. Do you get unsightly build up around your water faucets that are crusty and hard to remove? When you wash your hair does it feel lack luster and have a feeling of being coated or not really clean? These are signs that you have hard water.
Hard water is simply water that contains minerals that are gotten into the water by its contact with rocks at its source. The water flows around the rocks and miniscule particles of these rocks get into the water. The usual minerals that get into water are calcium and magnesium, although it can contain others also. The more minerals that you have in your water the more annoying it can be.
While these minerals in your water are not harmful to you, they are annoying when you try to clean them from surfaces that the water comes in contact with. It is usually only easily removed by using cleaning products that are specifically designed to get it off. Allowing the cleaner to soak on the hard water residue for several minutes will generally help it to come off easier, but rest assured, as long as you have hard water the stains will come back.
Hard water can also affect the way your laundry looks and feels. Your clothes and lines might feel stiff or scratchy and laundry detergents and soaps do not perform nearly as well in hard water. It is also possible to harm the fibers in clothes and other things over time. It can actually reduce the life of materials by up to forty percent.
Hard water can also leave the crusty residue in your plumbing pipes and in the water lines of your appliances. Over time this build up can reduce the flow of water and could actually cause your appliances to have to work harder and increase your energy bill. You probably never would have thought that.
One of the best and easiest solutions for getting rid of hard water is to have a water softener mechanism installed into your plumbing system. By doing this the majority of minerals are removed and will give you a much better quality of water for bathing, laundry, and for use in your appliances. Doing away with the mineral deposits in the water lines of your appliances can lengthen their life for up to three years in some cases. That would be enough savings right there to make the water softener well worth the investment.
