Distance Learning Bachelor Degree
Riley Hendersen
If you never had the opportunity to attend university as a full-time student, you will be pleased to learn that you can obtain your bachelors degree through distance learning. Now as always, it is not possible for everyone who finishes high school to go directly on to university. Sometimes, students at the end of their secondary education have not acquired a high enough academic standing, or they or their families cannot afford to incur the costs of tuition, books, supplies, food and accommodation necessary over four years to complete a standard undergraduate program.
As a result, some people enter the workforce directly at this point, while others might go on to obtain at least some college credits before they must, for whatever reason, join the workforce. In many cases however, people soon discover that a large number of jobs, even those at an entry level, are just not available to them because many employers expect their potential employees to have completed a bachelors degree as a minimum acceptable qualification for consideration.
In many instances it doesn't even matter to the employer what discipline or subject area the person has studied at university. What is important is that the person has demonstrated that they have the determination and skills to complete a prolonged regimen of program requirements, deadlines, and other obstacles, thus signaling that they are indeed worth hiring. So, many people find themselves in a dilemma over the need to work and the need to be educated, but it is one that has a solution.
It is now possible to obtain a bachelors degree through distance learning, in a vast array of disciplines, from anywhere in the country, or from anywhere in the world for that matter. Counselors can assist students in determining what program or subject areas would be right for them, given their background and interests. Often, it is better that a student enrolls in a program that is suited to him or her rather than trying to anticipate what a potential employer might be looking for. Remember that successful completion of the program is the most important factor.
Many institutions will admit adult students to their programs on a trial basis, so poor high school grades or long absence from formal schooling are not a problem. Universities have established specialized support mechanisms for their distance learning students, so that even though students will be studying from home, they can feel like they are part of a community of higher learning, with access to most of the same academic resources as their fellow students on campus. Students can work at their own pace, ensuring that school does not interfere with work and family obligations.
It can take several years to complete a bachelors degree through distance learning, but this should not serve to discourage potential students. Very often employers will provide financial incentives, such as reimbursement of tuition costs, for successful course completion, and they will sometimes reward employees with promotion opportunities, at various stages throughout their program. In the end, you will have obtained a bachelors degree, and the fact that you obtained it through a distance learning program may even prove to be an advantage.
