Addiction is a state in which a person's behavior or body system is completely under the control of an act or a substance in a way that is not normal. Medically, addiction refers to the subjection of the body to a substance, as in drug addiction. Addiction in this regard is known as a brain disease. Behaviorally, addiction like continuous sexual urge lack medical proof. A discontinuation or reduction in using the substance or engaging in the behavioral acts may render the life of the addict joyless.

Becoming a drug addict is a gradual process. It starts with a decision to use drug. Repeated use of it leads to a lost of control over it usage thereby making the person a drug addict. This transformation has been link to changes in the brain as a result of repeated use of a particular which is expressed in behaviors that is difficult to stop or control .This shows the biological and behavioral aspects of drug addiction.

Since drug addiction starts with the decision by the patient to use a particular drug and his or her eventual lost of will control, he or she should be involved in the treatment. This could take the form of exercising restraint in the use of the drug though with some external assistance. This assistance is necessary because drug addiction is a brain disease of which the patient has no control over. The patient also needs some medications that could help cure the disease. In a nutshell, the treatment should address the medical, behavioral and psychological aspect of the disease.

Another substance addiction is alcoholism. It is the uncontrollable urge or desire for alcohol by reason of continuous consumption. Most of the time people take to alcoholism to cover up some unpalatable emotions and situations such as sadness, fear, annoyance, loneliness, stress, failure, rejection, etc. Sometimes when people are happy they may decide to demonstrate it by engaging in alcoholic consumption and if this persist for long, it may result into addiction.

There have been various kinds of treatment advocated for alcoholic addicts but the medication ?topiramate? drew the most attention. It was reported by a team of experts at the University of Virginia in June, 2008. The drug was said to be capable of reducing the rate of alcoholic consumption and diminishing its psychosocial and physical adverse effects.

Similar to alcoholism is sex addiction. Their similarity can be traced to their source which is an unhealthy past. It has been discovered by some experts that most sex addict has a past of emotional abuse or physical abuse or sexual abuse or a combination of these. It is worth noting that sex itself is not a bad thing because without it procreation will simply be impossible. Also deriving pleasure in sex is not evil rather making sex the essence of life is what makes an addict. The consequence of sex addiction is devastating because it is capable of adversely affecting the core aspects of human relationship. Counseling addict in order to heal their past emotional injuries should be included in their treatment.
