Too Much Sun Exposure
Steve Lott
Now that summer has finally arrived, everyone is keen to get a sun tan and show of their bodies. However, there appears to be a paranoia about the sun and its harmful effects. Statistics show that the number of skin cancers are on the increase. Therefore, it is highly recommended that all individuals who get sun exposure get some type of skin protection before rushing to the beach.
There are a number of ways to avoid sun exposure and these include avoiding the sun, wearing protective clothing and putting on a wide brim hat. However, for those who want to get a tan in the sun, one should wear a sun screen.
There are 100s of sunscreens on the market and choosing one has become a mind boggling issue. Before one buys a sunscreen, it is important to know some basics.
- Always get a sunscreen which can block both UVA and UVB rays.
- Make sure that the sunscreen contains either zinc or titanium oxide or parsol 1789
- Ensure that the sunscreen has an SPF of at least 30 or higher. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection from sunburn caused mostly by UVB rays. But this does not mean that you can sit out in the sun longer.
- If you plan to be in the water, get a water proof sunscreen
- Get a sunscreen that is easy to apply and is comfortable to your skin
- Make sure you are not allergic to any components of the sunscreen before you buy one.
All sunscreens basically act in a similar fashion. Some absorb the UV rays and make them harmless and others reflect the UV rays. Almost all sunscreens have a combination of both components and come in a variety of formulations. Sunscreens are available as lotions, creams, or moisturizers.
Once you have applied a sunscreen, it must be reapplied every 2-3 hours to maintain its sun protection. Even if the manufacturers claim that there is all day protection, reapply again. If you plan to be in the sun, apply the sunscreen at least 20-30 mins before going out. Do not skimp on applications of the sunscreen. This is a common reason why people get sun-burnt. If you buy a water proof sunscreen and plan to swim, you need to reapply the sunscreen every 30-40 mins .Never apply sun screen in the eyes. Instead buy UV light blocking glasses.
One should be aware that just using sunscreens as a protection against skin cancer is not enough. For better skin cancer prevention, get in the habit of examining your skin. And once in while avoid the sun and get a tan using a tanning lotion. The results may not be long lasting, but they are safer than the sun.
