1. Always think seriously about the sort of person you want to meet. The mistake many people make is that they are looking for Mr or Miss perfect and no one comes up to scratch because you are looking for too many qualities or they decide that the first person they meet is the right one. Don't take things too seriously straight away and of course be prepared to be let down. Remember that the type of person you are looking for may decide that you are not the right one.

2. Think about what sort of goals you are looking for. Do you want to be married or settled down in two years time or are you just looking for companionship a few times a week. Ensure that you are honest with those that you are looking to date but at the same time don't scare any prospective partners off.

3. Think about where you can meet people. There are lots of different clubs for common interests such as tennis, ballroom dancing or walking groups. These are ideal places to meet people who share the same interests are you. Alternatively there are dating groups designed specifically for meeting new people and also internet sites.

4. Try to make an effort to look nice. Start visiting a gym or follow a health regime. Do you hair nice, take notice of your appearance and wear your best or favorite clothes. By looking your best, your confidence will be boosted.

5. Always be careful when arranging to meet someone. Let someone know who you are going to meet, when you are arranging a date and where. Arrange to contact your friend/family member after the date to let them know you are safe even if the date is successful. Plan an escape route if the date doesn't go as well as you hoped. But don't let this put you off meeting people.
