Thomas Building The New Line
Abhishek Agarwal
The idea of building scaled models of boats has been around for hundreds of years. One can even today see some of the first few attempts at model boat building at museums and in some churches. The date that goes back to this hobby proves that it has never failed to attract many people through the centuries. In earlier days, the model boats were built simply as a proof of the boat which was planned on being built, and boat makers used to do this. At the time it was the only way a builder could put across an idea to the buyer - in the absence of computer animations and sophisticated 3d tools of today.
During the nineteenth century boat building (model) saw huge improvements as they were made to scale and with fine details. The makers put extra effort into the details of the mast, the hull and the spares. Obviously it took a long time to make such models, and they were preserved as artifacts through the ages. Any model boat collector would love to acquire a piece from this era.
How this became a hobby
The first assembly kits to make model boats were introduced in the 1920s, and they did get a lot of attention. It was mainly thanks to the fine details in these scale model replicas - such as the anchor for instance. The fact that you had a guide to help you, or a blueprint and readily available parts attracted many a youngster to try his hand at this fascinating hobby.
But it was later in the century that this hobby was to really catch on in the world. A certain magazine called "Popular Science" began publishing content on this hobby, and that is what led to its immense popularity in the mid nineteen hundreds. The magazines also published the boat designs of well known ship builders. This drew a lot of attention to the magazine as well as to the hobby itself. Things had now come a long way from the time only sailors built models in their spare time.
The modern form of the hobby
Like everything else this hobby too has evolved with time. It is counted among the top hobbies in today's world. The models are the source of pride of the maker, and considered to be a work of art. The fine details that the users of today put into their model boats, are unmatched by any other hobby. You could get a kit to start you off, and kits are available in a variety of designs and skill levels from the amateur to the professional boat hobbyist. So there is something for all levels of enthusiasts.
