Each year you grow older, from the dawn of man the age of a person has been marked by the passing of time. Celebrating birthdays seems to have originated in Roman times with the spread of Mithraism through the Roman Empire. It was then adopted by the cultures they conquered. Children especially love birthdays, it is a time of celebration on the level of a child, giving when they pass so many days of life. The age of maturity is different in faiths and cultures. In some cultures and religions, when a child reaches a certain age, it marks a great change in their lives. Jewish boys, for example, have a Bar Mitzvah when they reach thirteen; girls have a similar ceremony when they reach twelve. Catholics on the other hand have confirmation in the Lord, showing they have the knowledge of good and evil whether they actually do or not.

Lucky for some you might say, they only celebrate every four years, if they were born on February 29th. You can only celebrate your birthday on the right date once in four years. Usually your birthday will come round every year. This may seem pretty obvious; one way around this is to use the Julian calendar.
