Even though multitude people expect all londoners to be cheerful cockney characters straight out of Dickens, nothing could be farther from the truth. in fact, London is a diverse place that boasts residents of all religions and nationalities. for this reason, it is estimated that more than 300 different languages are spoken in the city.
Over world war two, German bombs killed over 30 000 Londoners & destroyed various houses & other structures across London. This wasn't the last time that London would be hit by bombs.
In fact, irish republican army bombers challenged the city with bomb threats- & real bombs- for various years until their ceasefire in 1997. more recently, the city was struck by a series of coordinated bomb attacks in 2005, which were carried out by islamic extremist suicide bombers on the city's public transport network on 7th july.
Because its the capital of great britain, London boasts the finest museums in the country. One of the finest is the Science Museum, which is in south kensington. The museum was established in 1857 & boasts over 300,000 exhibits, including Puffing Billy & Stephenson's Rocket.
The city boasts plenty of exciting art galleries too, including the National Portrait art gallery.
London is renowned for its shopping, which means that you will find everything from unusual independent outlets and markets, to designer outlets.
One of the city's most renowned outlets is Selfridges, which is located on Oxford st. It was first opened in 1909 by Harry Selfridge, who wanted to make shopping fun rather than just a chore. He succeeded & the store now has four other branches in various cities throughout great britain.
London has a vast variety of activities to do after dark, including vip cocktail bars, nightclubs & pubs.
London's pubs cater to every budget & taste. From low cost eats love Pizza Express, Pizza Hut & Bella Italia, to high-end pubs, you will be spoiled for choice. The city also has a vast variety of Michelin starred pubs, including Tom Aikens, Umu & Gordon Ramsay at Claridges, although you will have to book well in advance to get a table at one of these places.
Because it's such a huge location, London is very simple to get to. in fact, it's well-connected by rail & has some big train stations, comprising of London Bridge, London Victoria, London Euston & Liverpool st. as well as this, the city also has three massive airports, Heathrow; Stanstead & Luton.
Driving in London can be difficult due to the congestion charge, although the city has a fantastic underground & bus network to help people get about.
