The Murder Of Kurt Cobain
Staff Writer Gina Nonie
Because Nirvana's charismatic lead singer's body was "discovered" on April 8, 1994, no one can pinpoint when Kurt Cobain actually took his life with a single shotgun blow to the brain via the mouth, but it is widely accepted as April 5, 1994. Here it is, 15 years later, and the singer / songwriter is more prolific than ever, as his spirit recruits a new generation of fans that surpasses numbers by the current industry standards, and inspires avante garde works of art by various entities.
Case in point, a new art book titled, "Cobain Unseen" by Charles Cross comes to mind. Mr. Cross is known for many authentic rock biographies, as he did pen "Heavier than Heaven," probably the most comprehensive and "Courtney-approved" biography on Kurt Cobain. One of the many ways "Cobain Unseen" is exemplary is that it contains an exremely personal audio recording in a CD insert, that has never been heard before, of Kurt reading out loud from one of his diaries. Plus the book world premiers adept artwork created by Kurt, along with haunting original photographs.
The now-retired novelist Fysche says it best with this quote, "If that title 'Cobain Unseen' is not spiritually guided, we do not know what is.'" In Fysche's final novel recently released last month on Kurt Cobain's birthday, "220: S I F T I N G The Alien Battle Royale or How we met the Spirit of Kurt Cobain," Fysche postulates that Mr. Cobain's spirit continues to fulfill a mission, even 15 years after leaving this plane of existence. This compelling work http://www.books-and-authors.net/Interviews/Fysche.html specifically references Kurt's lyrics which have a Nostradamus-like quality to them:
"None of you will ever know my true intent," Kurt scrawled on his wall with a red Sanford magic marker at his last residence at 171 Lake Washington Blvd. near Seattle during his final month of life.
Whether it be the Cobain action figures or Kurt's smashed guitar on eBay that sold for $100,000, Kurt Cobain is #10 on the list of "Top 10: Profitable Dead Celebrities of All Time," according to AskMen.com. In 2006, Kurt Cobain was the richest rock star at the very top of the list, when the Nirvana estate earned $50 million that year, besting even Elvis, thanks to live posthumous albums and box sets.
One of Kurt Cobain's contemporaries, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan who was born literally days after Kurt, ponders this theme in a lyric from the song, "Heavy Metal Machine,"
"If I were dead, would my records sell? Could you even tell... Let me die for Rock n'Roll..."
Some of Kurt's "Nostradamus-like lyrics" appear to answer:
"I'm On a Plain I can't complain."
With numbers like that, who would?
Both Cobain and Corgan share more than a Chinese Horoscope (goat,) or star sign, (Pisces,) or muse (Fysche,); they were launched by the same legendary producer, Butch Vig.
Actually, they all made each other household names. Mr. Vig took what he learned from his first "real-budget" project, Nirvana's "Nevermind," to craft "Siamese Dream," by Smashing Pumpkins. Both albums are two of the best of the 1990s, possibly of all time.
"Smells like Teen Spirit," from "Nevermind," is listed as the #1 song of the 1990s, according to VH1. No other late rock star has the #1 song of an entire decade. No wonder the money keeps rolling in.
In further tribute, we also intend to purchase the limited edition Kurt Cobain Converse sneakers, http://www.converse.com/index.aspx?&CSID=44&kwid=converse#productdetail to do our part in ensuring that his estate remains in the top 10 of all time.
You are welcome, Frances Bean.
Kurt Cobain, R.I.P.
