The World As We Know It
Aydan Corkern
It might be a really funny scene if we could watch the first time that cave people tried to start a fire. Knowing that sticks would burn is probably why the first attempt was made to rub them together. It must have been a rally determined cave person to just keep rubbing and rubbing those sticks until they finally saw smoke coming from them. It eventually must have worked because they had to figure out how to start a fire besides waiting on Mother Nature to do her thing.
Eventually people got the stick rubbing down to an art form and later on they used flint to create sparks. It could still be a pain though to be out in the wilderness in the cold or rain and try to get a fire started. The inventor of matches had to be really loved. As long as you kept them dry it made fire starting so much easier. Just a flick of the wrist and you had fire. You could take them with you anywhere you wanted to do and it was so convenient.
Then along came the lighter. It only had to be kept full of flint and fluid in order to work. If it got wet you could keep striking it until the moisture disappeared and then it would light. It could be a little aggravating making sure the wick was in good shape and that the flint and fuel was in place. They were used for many years unfortunately by smokers, but they were used for many other things too.
When the disposable lighter finally came along, it made having fire on hand even easier. The only bad thing about disposable lighters is that they eventually run out and have to be replaced. After disposable lighters had been on the market for quite a few years, concerns for the safety of children came up. It was so easy to light one that safety devices were placed on them for a time, but today they rarely have them.
The only other drawback to disposable lighters is the way they are thrown away. Disposable means just that, they are discarded after they are no longer useful. In an age when salvaging what ever we can and recycling everything possible, people really should find a way to make sure that their disposable fire starters are recycled too.
Following these simple ideas can have a major impact on your future if you choose to apply them to your life.
