Oil On Spark Plugs
Amanda Nealy
Taylor Cable Products, Inc. is a Original Equipment (OE) and aftermarket performance parts manufacturing company which currently is currently based in Grandview, Kansas City, Missouri. All operations such as manufacturing, assembly and storage is found in the company's 100, 000 square foot Missouri headquarters.
Found in 1923, the company produces mainly car electrical components and accessories, with numerous dealers spread across the US and Canada, plus 83 certified online distributors. The company's current slogan is “When Performance Comes Down to the Wire." clearly a play on the company's specialty in automotive electrical wires.
The company gained its reputation for specializing in the production of quality spark plug wires for numerous racing cars, and has since distributed its products as OEM parts for various automobile brands such as Daimler Chrysler, Mack Trucks, John Deere and Harley-Davidson. For the past 80 years however, Taylor Cable also provides aftermarket parts for various automotive lines but still continues to distribute their wires for numerous motorsports teams. To date, Taylor Cable is involved in the development and production of 26 product lines, which includes ignition plug wires, battery cables, and wiring harnesses.
Taylor Cable also owns the rights to Vertex Magnetos, which it acquired in 1994. Vertex is popular brand name for magnetos, a device that is used to provide electrical pulses to spark plugs that ignites the fuel mixture inside internal combustion engines. The device is independent of the car battery, producing electricity with the use of magnets and rotors.
While Taylor Cable spark plugs wires come in different incarnations depending on several factors. Car make and models usually are one concern, since certain dimensions vary from brand to brand.
Other Taylor Cable performance parts are specifically marketed to certain audience's driving preference, for example, all Taylor Cable spark plug wires have a either a universal, racing and custom-fit line available.
Another factors to consider is the ignition type used, while most modern automobiles use sophisticated mechanically timed electrical ignition systems, there is still a market for cars using magneto system or battery operated ignition.
Most if not all sets of the Taylor Cable with several layers of silicone rubber, a polymer that can withstand extreme heat up to 500°C, providing good insulation thus making spark jumping less likely. The wire coating varies depending on the product. Resistors and solid core setups are normally used by the Hi Energy and 8mm Pro Wire line. Spiral wound applications are used by the 8mm Spiro Pro and 409 Pro Race lines. While the high-end Thundervolt 8.2 and Thundervolt 10.4 use the ferrite spiral wound style. An alloy of copper and nickel is the material of choice.
The design goal is to distribute the spark to lessen power loss from the either the ignition coil or magneto. Certain brands come with radio frequency interference and electromagnetic interference suppression. A fiberglass coil is also a standard, in order to ensure the durability of the wire.
Some benefits of having evenly distributed spark is better fuel economy, gains in torque and an increase in horsepower.
