If you are a parent buying for your grade school children you've been learning the ropes for a few years. However, if your child is new to school or you're doing your own school shopping for the first time, you can benefit from a heads up on how, what and where to shop.
These five tips will help you save money AND your sanity!
THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM
Don't wait too long or you won't find what you want at your preferred discount stores. If you really want some great deals, get out to do your shopping early.
There will be plenty of supplies on sale by August. Don't forget dollar stores for low prices on pens, paper and a myriad of other necessary items.
If you've waited too long already your best bet is stationary or office supply stores. While they may not always be the cheapest they're more likely to keep their supplies in stock. You'll also save yourself running around since they're sure to have everything you need.
GET OUT THAT MEMBERSHIP CARD
Bulk stores and membership clubs should be considered if you know some other people who also to pick up some supplies.
Buy the large discounted packages of pencils, paper and other common supplies divide them up between everyone. You may not find everything you need, but you'll save money on the essentials.
YOUR SCHOOL MAY HAVE WHAT YOU NEED
Ask if your school has a purchasing plan for supplies. You may be able to split the costs of a bulk order with other parents or students.
This will save you the hassle of shopping and dealing with complaints about color and brands as well as saving you money.
SEASONAL SALES
Now's the time to stock up on summer and sport related clothing. If your child will be taking part in after school activities like swimming or gymnastics you can get a great deal on their gear with end-of-season sales.
Try to find clothing which can also be incorporated for the fall and winter too. Skirts can be paired with thick tights, tank tops can be worn under sweaters and shirts with long sleeves, and Capri pants can be paired with boots to merge summer clothes into winter outfits.
Some schools enforce strict dress codes so bear this in mind when selecting clothing. Skirt lengths and bare shoulders should be taken into account
THE RIGHT BAG IS KEY
Don't forget the bag! Kids bags are often far too large and heavy for them which leads to sore muscles and even headaches. Always choose a backpack that sits no lower than the waist and look for styles with padded shoulder straps and a waist strap for added support.
Fashion conscious students may prefer hobo bags and slouchy purses but these are not suitable for heavy books. If you prefer this type of bag then make sure that you get one with a strap that crosses the body spreading the weight. Heavy books should be carried in a backpack making sure that it is worn properly and not slung over one shoulder.
Every new year at school is ripe with exciting possibilities. Instead of stressing out while shopping for your back-to-school items, be sure to have fun!
