More and more holidaymakers are turning to long relaxing sea cruises as a change from years of cheap package holidays. These cruise newbies are finding out that there's more to your average cruise liner than deck chairs and ocean views, and these ships in particular are far from average. Here are five of the most exciting cruise ships on the face of the earth!
NCL's Norwegian Gem
The Gem is a sprawling ship ? so huge you could well get lost onboard, and you might never bump into the same person twice as this liner can house more than two thousand passengers!
There are twelve restaurants, a cornucopia of bars, a Nintendo Wii with a screen that's two decks high for cinema-style gaming, and even a bowling alley, you'll never be short of things to do on board the Gem. For those who like a relaxed vibe, the Gem is perfect ? you're free to eat when you like, as there are no set times for dining ? and you're free to wear what you like, as there is no dress code whatsoever.
Holland America's Eurodam
The Holland America brand are known for their smaller scale liners, creating a more cosy atmosphere. Their latest cruise ship, the Eurodam, is now their biggest, at a princely 86,000 tonnes. Launched in the summer of 2008, this classy love boat can offer luxury cabins, some of which offer private access to the spa, and feature floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall windows so that you can fall gently asleep, or wake up, with a widescreen view of the ocean, perfect for the romantic in you!
Costa Cruises' Costa Serena
This 114,000 ton, 3,000 passenger Italian cruise liner is a great choice for a family who wishes to enjoy a cruise in relaxed, informal surroundings. Among its multitude of activities, this liner boasts the largest range in spa facilities ? perfect for those looking to unwind on their trip.
Princess Cruises' Emerald Princess
As well as its very own trattoria, the Emerald also features a 3-tier piazza, circus performances, and daily comedy shows. The latest addition to the 16-strong fleet of Princess liners currently drifting round the world is the Emerald. The usual passenger capacity of around 3000 passengers is upheld on this latest Princess ship, and the standard of service we've come to expect from Princess is also maintained beautifully. And the activities on this liner are truly unique.
