Nascar Crashes At Talladega
Kris Mcginn
As the sport of NASCAR racing grows in popularity, an offshoot fascination grows as well. Many of the NASCAR fans go to the races with the hopes of seeing a spectacular NASCAR crash. This fascination with the morbid side of the sport baffles many fans and commentators, yet the interest in NASCAR crashes continues to rise.
NASCAR crashes has been around for a very long time. They have been a regular occurrence since the beginning of the sport. It makes sense that when you place high powered vehicles on a track, add speed and adrenalin, NASCAR crashes are inevitable. The fact that NASCAR crashes occur, despite safety precautions isn't what baffles the leaders, drivers, and promoters of NASCAR. Crashes are a part of the sport, what is shocking is the fan's response to these crashes.
An increasing number of fans are constantly searching for footage of crashes that happened many years ago. Search engine research turns up the fact that fans are continually searching sites such as YouTube for archived footage of old crashes. With every new crash that occurs, searches for that driver's name increases, in addition to an increased sales of driver merchandise.
What Gives with the Interest in NASCAR Crashes?
The fascination starts with the idea of chancing lady luck and staring mortality in the face. Intrigue with NASCAR crashes has a lot to do with drivers boldly taking on something that is extremely dangerous due to the speeds involved. A non-fatal crash is to the fan the ultimate demonstration of courage, because the driver walked away from an event that would have killed most other people. And when a driver loses his life, it stirs deep emotions in millions of people. Perhaps it causes people to look at their own mortality. If a seemingly untouchable can lose his life, then death can and will come for all. Interest in celebrity death is nothing new, but the added excitement of a crash gives accidents in NASCAR an extra bit of interest.
Another, less spiritual reason people are fascinated with NASCAR crashes, has to do with the commercial side of life. The value of a driver's merchandise, and the total number of sales increase when the driver has been involved in an accident. Many vendors and collectors of NASCAR memorabilia, watch with great interest whenever a crash is reported, because with that crash comes the opportunity to make money. There's often a spike in merchandise sales on eBay whenever a driver has been involved in an accident. It's sad that some people financially exploit the demise of a NASCAR hero, but unfortunately that's something that will probably not easily disappear.
