Background Check Criminal Records
John Allmon
When a person with a criminal record begins to look for employment, he really cannot afford to be too picky about what type of job he accepts. He should realize that once most employers run a background check on him and see that he is a past offender, his chances of being offered a job with that company are slim to none. But, there are ways of finding work when you are trying to turn your life around after making a mistake.
First of all, swallow your pride and contact everyone you know, friends and family alike. Ask them if they know of anyone who might be willing to give you a chance by hiring you. Mention the fact that you are fearful that your criminal record will show up in a background check, and punish you before you ever have a chance to show an employer what you can do. Make sure you get across to them how eager you are to work, how the time you spent behind bars taught you the value of a job well done, and how you will do your very best at any job you happen to get. People who know you are not going to judge you as harshly as a stranger would. They know more about your weaknesses and strengths, believe you deserve a chance, and want you to succeed.
What you should consider is an entry-level job. You may have been quite the executive before your incarceration, and are qualified for a well-paying position. But, the best way for you to start life in the workplace all over again is to take any job you can get. You are going to have to reconstruct your job resume from scratch. Take that janitorial job, or the one down the street flipping burgers. This is not going to be your life’s career! It’s just a stepping stone to a better job. If you do this job well, and are personable and show interest, you will receive a good recommendation when the time comes for you to seek another job. Or, you may find that your employer is so impressed with your work and your attitude that he or she offers you a promotion within the company. What you want to prove is that you are an excellent employee. If, after holding down this first job for several months, you decide that you would like to try something new and move up the employment ladder a rung or two, your good work record will speak volumes. Employers realize that your performance on past jobs can tell them a lot about how you would fit in with their company.
When your employee background check shows a criminal record, you will have to be patient. As time goes by, that record is going to fade into the background of your life. You will obtain jobs, and employers will see than you definitely don’t fit the stereotype that has unfairly been assigned to people who have been convicted of a crime. Your resume will become one to be proud of as you rebuild it. Don’t get frustrated or depressed because things are not happening as quickly as you had hoped. It takes time and effort to put your past behind you, but it can be done. Not all companies do background checks.
