Plastic surgery, of any sort, is not to be taken lightly. However, we live in a day and age where personal appearance has an ever-increasing influence on the way we function within our society and many people are making the decision to utilize cosmetic surgery to improve appearances and reconstructive surgery to correct defects or improve function.
Breast Enlargement (Augmentation Mammaplasty) is one of the most common of all cosmetic procedures. It is performed using general anesthesia and only takes about an hour. Recovery time can vary based on the individual, but most women can return to normal activities within three weeks. Unfortunately, breast augmentation is often quite expensive due to the skill of the doctors and the stigma of being an "unnecessary" surgical procedure.
This is truer in certain areas around the country than others, reflecting the lifestyles and choices of citizens of large cities versus those in more rural area. For instance, in Los Angeles, breast augmentation is much more prevalent than it is in Utah. It therefore, stands to reason that breast augmentation in California (specifically the L.A. area) would be much more expensive. Combine this with the already lopsided cost of living, and that makes for a huge difference in cost between the two areas.
For instance, the average cost in the U.S. for breast implants is around $7,000 (including anesthesia, recovery, etc). In San Diego, breast augmentation surgery can cost upwards of $10,000 to $15,000 while in more rural areas, plastic surgeons may offer the procedure for $5,000. Which means a person in one part of the country could save hundreds by traveling as opposed to staying in San Diego for breast implant surgery.
The cost benefit may not be the only reason to seek an out-of-state cosmetic surgeon. Due to the vast population in metropolitan cities, the more reputable doctors there may be over-booked while doctors in less populated areas are more likely to have open availability for procedures sooner and at more convenient times. Additionally, a busy doctor may not be able to give you the same level of post-operative care that a small-town surgeon could give.
In summation, while there are benefits to having cosmetic surgery (particularly for breast implants) performed in U.S. population centers; there are also many negatives that can be offset by visiting a nearby state to have a procedure performed. There are many qualified cosmetic surgeons across the country, and choosing one of those outside your hometown to perform your surgery could save you hundreds of dollars while being more convenient in many other ways as well.
