Barack Obama's Political Views
Rodrigo Rehn
What happens when you have been dating someone for awhile and suddenly you find out that your political views are totally different from one another. With the 2008 election just around the corner many people are thinking about this and more passionate about politics than usual just because of the state of the country and world. What happens when you discover that someone has different beliefs than you?
What happens is entirely up to you. You need to remember first and foremost that political opinions do not complete the person. While you may have some very different ideas of what is right and wrong when it comes to politics, this doesn't mean that you are either right or wrong for another. It means that you will have to move past political affiliations and find and meet on common grounds in other areas of your relationship and facets of your personality.
You can discuss politics and share your opinions and how you have arrived at them, but you both need to agree to keep things calm and not get worked up by your differences. You need to realize that your goal should not be to change the mind of the person that you are dating, but simply express how you feel and why you feel that way. This will allow you to respectfully share this aspect of both of your lives without taking away from what you both believe in separate from one another.
Just agree to disagree and move on. If you do this you may actually have a lot of fun debating political issues. It's when people get too serious about the differences between them and other people in association with politics that it gets nasty. When you discuss your standpoint with others who feel differently you may find that it makes you feel even more sure of the way that you believe and will deepen your political convictions.
You can date and even respect someone who has a different political view than you, but you need to remember to keep things light. If you can debate and have fun with it, go for it. If this isn't something that you can share with one another, just don't have politics be a part of the time that you share together.
Many people date others that are of a different political school of thought than them. This doesn't have to make or break your relationship and you may find that it can be something that you can enjoy talking about and discussing together, just remember that the idea is not to change their mind about the way they think!
