Instead of just relying on your homeowners insurance to fix the damage that has been done, why not help protect your home from invasion in the first place. The changes you make today will not only help protect your home and family but could actually reduce the cost of your homeowners insurance premiums.
Have outdoor lighting. Whether the system is triggered by motion or stays on through out the night - have something that lights up the area around your house so that there is not easy place for the bad guys to hide.
Keep your shrubs trimmed back from windows. These can provide cover for criminals trying to unlock windows and find a way in to your home.
Install an alarm system. Just having the sign in front of your home (and on the windows) is sometimes enough deterrent to send criminals to the next door down.
Keep the windows locked - that includes those on the top floor. If they do not have locks then it's time to consider investing in new windows.
Keep the doors locked when you are gone and even when you are at home. And open door is an open invitation to the bad guys.
An ounce of prevention is often all you need to protect your home and family and even lower your insurance costs in the process.
