Percentage Of Car Accidents
Simon Jacobs
The most obvious way to avoid car accidents is to pay more attention and to not do two things at the same time. Using phones in the car, even with a remote headset, is an easy way to accelerate the possibility of a car accident.
Trying not to do several things at the same time is another way to avoid a vehicle accident. Multi-tasking while driving often leads to more road traffic accidents. Listening to the radio, using the phone, driving and eating definitely creates hazards.
Although many people think that drinking a lot of coffee is a good way to stay awake on the road, drinking too much can also dehydrate you, make you need the toilet more frequently and if drunk in excessive amounts, will not keep you as awake as you think.
Too much coffee can cause "coffee nerves" and make drivers jittery and jumpy. This can make driving habits and patterns erratic and abnormal.
Along with becoming more aware, there are things that car drivers can do to look after themselves on the road. The following list has things that motoring organisations like the AA and the RAC say drivers should be aware of to prevent car accidents:
Check your car on a regular basis to make sure that it is mechanically sound. Do the obvious, and repair anything that is broken or which needs to be mended.
Prepare your car for bad weather conditions by having seasonal checks (e.g. for anti-freeze) and carrying necessary equipment like ice scrapers in the car.
Most car accidents occur in the left hand lane. Avoid the left hand lane and use the centre or right lane to have more chance to escape problems that occur.
Beware of blind spots: adjust your mirrors so that you can see behind you.
Drive with your hands in the nine and three o'clock position. This enables maximum vehicle control to avoid car accidents.
Know what your car can deal with on the road: pay attention to how your car reacts in particular situations and in response to certain road conditions. Other things to watch out for include tyre grip and bald tyres.
Avoid driving at night. Although there may be less traffic on the road, fatigue and decreased field of vision can also cause car accidents. Only drive at night if you are feeling awake.
Pay even more attention than normal at junctions or intersections. Over 65 per cent of road traffic accidents occur at junctions. Look around carefully.
Dangerous roads with ice, snow, fog and rain require slower speeds and greater caution.
Leave plenty of space around trucks, long-distance vehicles and farming vehicles like tractors.
Keep plenty of space between you and the car in front.
Get rid of any distractions like talking on the phone, reading newspapers and changing stations on the radio.
Watch other drivers on the road and look at their cars. If a driver has a dirty car and is not taking care of their car, it may mean that they are inattentive on the road too.
Keep your car clean - clean the headlights and the windscreen regularly and keep cleaning materials in your car.
Keep to the speed limit.
Use the safety devices like headrests on your car properly to avoid neck and back injuries from whiplash in the event of a car accident.
