Spiral Coil Binding Machine
Jeff Mcritchie
Making sense of all the different spiral coil binding machines and their options can be difficult. If you need more information on these machines so you can make an educated purchasing decision for your school or office, this article will help you to better understand the equipment and choose the spiral coil machine that is best for you.
Some models of coil binding machines use electric punching mechanisms, and some have pull handles. For businesses that bind high volumes of publications or that must have a quick turnaround, electric binding machines usually are the ideal choice. For those binding fewer documents, manual equipment usually costs less and generally works well. However, even if you don't bind a lot of books you might still benefit from an electric machine if you often face tight deadlines and need to get the work done quickly.
Coil binding machines vary a great deal in the number of pages they can punch at once. Some machines can punch only a couple of sheets at a time, while others can punch up to thirty sheets. Think about the volume of pages that you will probably punch. A machine with higher page capacity will save time and make your employees more productive.
Another consideration when purchasing spiral coil system is the coil inserter. Many machines are equipped with rollers to thread the coils into your publications. If your machine does not include an electric coil inserter, you will have to insert the coils by hand. Obviously, hand spinning coils is not an effective solution for those who bind a lot of documents.
You will also want to think about the sizes of the documents you may need to bind. If you only use standard sized documents, most machines will work. If you anticipate binding any nonstandard size documents, you should consider a machine that has disengageable dies. Disengageable dies allow you to create documents in custom sizes. This is especially appealing to crafters and scrapbookers who like to make their own books.
We all know most things come in varying quality levels. Spiral coil binding machines are no different. Less expensive spiral coil binding machines are often constructed of plastic. Plastic machines will work for lower binding volumes, but they are not a good idea for those who will do a lot of binding. For that reason, metal binding machines are a better choice for businesses needing to do more binding. Metal spiral coil binding machines tend to be much stronger and less prone to damage.
Some spiral coil machines are shipped with a pair of crimping pliers used to secure your publication's pages by crimping the ends of the spiral coil and cutting off the excess. If your machine does not include crimping pliers, put them on your shopping list because you will need them to finish the binding.
No discussion of shopping for spiral coil binding machines would be complete without addressing the warranty. Some warranties only last three months, while others extend two years. You will also want to understand the type of warranty offered. Is it a return for repairs warranty or a full replacement warranty? Waiting for repairs can mean lost productivity, so think through warranty options before buying a spiral coil binding machine.
With the all of the differences in spiral coil binding machine construction, options, accessories, and warranties, you will want to carefully consider your document binding needs before making your final selection.
