Smartlipo is a form of laser-assisted liposuction that has been used around the world for years, and is now available in Canada. Its popularity can be attributed to being far less invasive than other traditional methods of liposuction because of the use of a laser based device that doesn't just break up fat in the target area. The heat of the laser device, in the form of a laser fibre threaded through a tiny cannula measuring no more than 1mm in diameter, melts the fat so that removing it is easier. Plus, vessels are coagulated so that less bleeding and bruising occur. Excess skin is tightened to achieve a more pleasing contour following the procedure with the promotion of collagen regeneration. Only an incision of approximately 2mm is required to accommodate the insertion of this device in the desired area.
In some cases, the melted fat does not have to be removed during treatment with Smartlipo. Instead, small amounts of unwanted fat can be eliminated naturally by the body in the process known as lipolysis.
Smartlipo should only be performed by those physicians properly trained in the technique, and who possess the Smartlipo LaserBodySculptingSM Workstation manufactured by Cynosure.
Smartlipo has been approved by the FDA. Approval was granted by Health Canada in the summer of 2007.
