There are many forms of arthritis. It is a disease that affects the joints of the body, causing a lot of pain and discomfort. Chiropractic specifically focuses on joints and the spine, making it a possible form of treatment for arthritis patients. Many patients have gone through the gamut of conventional medical treatments with little help for their suffering. These patients are searching for alternative medical treatments for their problems and are looking to chiropractic treatments to help them get relief.
One of the commonest forms of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This causes inflammation in the lining of the joints, and internal organs, like skin, blood vessels and eyes. It can either be chronic or have flares and remissions. It affects the whole body and causes inflammation of the lining of the joints. It can also destroy the bone and cartilage. This results in pain and loss of mobility.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease; this means that the body's immune system literally starts attacking the body's own tissues. This is a malfunction of the immune system. Chiropractors believe that their methods will improve the immune system and make it function normally.
How can Chiropractic treatment help? Chiropractors believe that subluxations (misalignment of the vertebrae) are the root cause of many diseases; they feel that these misalignments have a detrimental effect on the nervous system, which is closely allied with the immune system.
Chiropractic treatment attempts to align vertebrae through adjustment. When chiropractors align the vertebrae they believe that they will improve the nervous system and the immune system. This in turn should help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. This will not cure the disease but chiropractic treatment can help to bring relief and slow the progress of rheumatoid arthritis.
When the patient is experiencing a flare up chiropractic treatment is not advised, the chiropractor will merely splint the affected joint and attempt to immobilize it. Once the disease is in subacute stage, heat is recommended prior to exercise. Strengthening exercises are prescribed to keep muscles working. When the disease is in relapse, or chronic stage, these exercises are continued with heat therapy before exercise, and ice application afterwards, to decrease inflammation.
Chiropractic treatments are highly controversial but many have been known to work. For serious diseases like rheumatoid arthritis other alternative medicines are often coupled with chiropractic treatments. Nutrition can play a large part in the treatment of this disease, as some foods are thought to be triggers. If the patient is allergic to wheat and or corn some practitioners believe this could aggravate the disease. Good nutrition will certainly help the body to combat serious diseases of this sort.
