Benzoyl Peroxide And Acne
Harvey D. Ong
Acne rosacea skin care can be a daunting task for someone who has no idea how to go about the whole thing. There are several treatments that a person can choose from, with some of them being the topical sort that need to be applied on the skin and others are ingested in the form of pills. These acne rosacea skin care treatments can come in a variety of forms and use a wide range of key ingredients, with one of them being a potent compound known as benzoyl peroxide.
Benzoyl peroxide is, as the name implies, from the peroxide family of compounds, a powerful bleaching agent, and has antibacterial properties. These antibacterial properties are what make it a common component of acne rosacea skin care treatments, because there are dermatological experts that believe acne rosacea is triggered by certain species of bacteria that come to reside in the pores and on the surface of the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is also thought to reduce the effects of inflammation, which is a side effect found in some cases of acne.
Benzoyl Peroxide is among the more popular acne treatment compounds in the market, though it is not the only one. Alternative compounds include salicylic acid, as well as milder forms of peroxide. Also, benzoyl peroxide as an acne rosacea skin care treatment option is not perfect. There are various side effects associated with the use of the compound, most notably periods of discomfort or irritation. This is particularly pronounced if the subject has sensitive skin. Even low concentrations of the compound can cause problems such as redness, dryness, swelling, and inflammation. The compound has also been known to bleach clothing and other items that come into contact with it.
As an antioxidant, benzoyl peroxide does not have much of a reputation. It does have properties that make it an antioxidant, but it is not a particularly effective one and, in most cases, an alternative such as salicylic acid might be better suited for that purpose. In theory, in larger quantities, it can be used to perform the functions of a commercial antioxidant but, at the same time, it is liable to generate any number of side effects. As stated before, depending on the sensitivity of the skin, even low concentrations of the compound can generate everything from extreme discomfort to inflammation and swelling.
Antioxidants, contrary to popular misconception, are not used as acne treatments. At least, not on their own or as the sole active ingredient in such a treatment. Antioxidants help keep the skin from showing the signs of age, with the effects being more potent and noticeable with age. Benzoyl peroxide, in the amounts that are placed into commercial products like acne treatments, do not contain enough to have a noticeable effect. Aside from the potential side effects, there is also a legal limit to just how much benzoyl peroxide can be put into an over-the-counter treatment.
