Severe Diaper Rash Treatment
Juliet Cohen
Diaper rash is a type of irritant dermatitis that is localized to the diaper area in infants and often spares the skin of the folds beneath the diaper. Most infants develop a diaper rash at some time or another; some even arrive home from the hospital with a slight rash. Diaper rash may be more common after solid foods are added to your baby's diet or when your baby is taking antibiotics. Other factors that can lead to diaper rash include continuously wet or infrequently changed diapers, diarrhea and the use of plastic pants to cover a diaper. Diaper rashes can occur intermittently, anytime while your child wears diapers.
They're more common in babies during their first 15 months, especially between 8 and 10 months of age. Diaper rash is characterized by red, puffy and perhaps slightly warmer skin in the diaper region buttocks, thighs and genitals. Diaper rashes are most common between 8 and 10 months old. They also frequently appear when babies are taking antibiotics, having loose stools, or have just started solid foods. Most diaper rashes are caused by skin irritation. Irritation can be caused by diapers that rub against the skin, fit too tightly or are left on for too long. Heat, moisture and irritated skin make it easier for diaper rash to start and for germs to grow.
Baby Diaper Rash Treatment and Prevention Tips
1. Avoid using plastic pants.
2. Use larger sized diapers until the rash goes away.
3. Steroids or frequent use can lead to additional problems.
4. Diaper liners in cloth diapers may help keep your baby's skin drier.
5. If diaper rash persists, change the type of wipes, diapers or soap you're using.
6. Don't use creams that contain boric acid, camphor, phenol, methyl salicylate or compound of benzoin tincture.
