Skin Weft Hair Extensions
Marquetta Breslin
A skin weft weave is on the cutting edge of styling. When properly completed, a skin weft weave is beautiful and undetectable. Skin weft weaves are often preferred over other weaving methods because it only takes a short amount of time to complete this flawless style.
A skin weft weave is similar to other bonded weaves. The only difference is that in a regular bonded weave, the track is applied directly to the scalp. In a skin weft weave, the track is actually applied to the natural hair.
With a skin weft weave, extra care must be taken around ceramic irons, curling irons, and other heated styling tools. This is because bonding glue doesn't like heat. If your iron gets too close to the bond, the heat can melt the glue.
There are basically two different types of hair you can use for your skin weft weave: human hair or synthetic hair. Human hair is the obvious choice because of its durability and ability to take and hold styles, color, heat-styles, and wet-sets. Some synthetic hair can be wet-set; however, if you're planning on using any type of heat to style your hair, you should stick with human hair. Either way, you want to match your extension hair as closely as possible to your hair's natural color and texture.
Instructions for completing a skin weft weave:
1. If you can, start by straightening the hair beforehand. This is so that you won't have to straighten over the bond. Always start with clean hair. Hair that has oil, products, or gels in it can cause the bond not to adhere properly.
2. Your first part will be at the nape of the neck, from the left side to the right. Measure your weft to the desired length and cut where needed. Then, apply the bonding substance to the track of the weft.
3. Apply your weft so that it is as close as possible to the scalp, but still remaining on the natural hair. To secure the hold of the weft, press firmly for a few seconds.
4. Your next part should be about a half-inch thick, as should all your parts for this particular style. To avoid tangling, brush the hair in between each weft application.
5. Continue placing the weft on the hair until you have a piece on top that you can't apply tracks to in a horizontal fashion. Create a part about 1-2 inches from the top of the forehead. With this piece and the remaining amount of hair, part the hair how you or your client would like it parted. Use the rest of the hair to blend and cover the tracks.
When your skin weft weave is complete, make sure to use extra care with heated styling tools. Ceramic irons and curling irons can melt the glue bond, causing the tracks to slip or fall out completely.
When cared for and completed properly, you new skin weft weave will give you 2-4 weeks of joy!
