Zachary Quinto studies the idea of the half-human, half Vulcan role of Spock. When he auditioned for the role, he bound his fingers to practice the Vulcan Salute, shaved his eyebrows and dyed and flattened his hair in order to convey the many Spock attributes. Leonard Nimoy, former player of Spock, was happy to advise Quinto as they met at his house.

The trailer to the new film shows Kirk when he was much younger, opening with him recovering from a bar fight. Another man claims that he knew his father; he was the captain of a starship and saved over 800 people including Kirk. He encourages Kirk to enlist in Starflight to train, fight and ultimately become captain of his own ship.
