A common scenario of a USP is to express what you do in the time it would take the elevator to get from the top floor to the bottom, and by the time you are done, the other person is taking the next step you wish them to take. The important aspect of this is that the other person would be so drawn by your Unique Self Promotion because they are clear of the value you could help them create by taking action.
Well, this USP concept is fine and dandy, but how do you write a compelling USP? There are many models of how to write one, and recently a good friend shared five simple steps to help create a USP very quickly. I trust that if you take the time to use these steps you'll see your next level of success, and it may even come with ease.
So, let's get started. Before I share the steps with you it is important to mention that each of the steps will be asking you to write a compelling statement addressing that step, and to do it in 12 words or less. Of course, the goal is that within each set of 12 words, you make that statement the most powerful and effective step you can to help the listener understand how they will gain by working with you.
Here are the five steps:
1. Building Rapport - The goal of this statement is to have the listener become very clear of who you are.
2. Positioning - In this step you are to express what you and/or your company does.
3. Benefit - Here is where you help the person understand the benefit of what you are sharing. Remember, each statement is to be less than 12 words.
4. Proof - This statement gives credibility through social proof that what you are sharing is actually true and effective.
5. Action Step - This is where you establish with clarity the next step you want the person to take.
