"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The words of the Constitution of the United States of America give us, as Americans, the right to use and keep firearms. Did the founding fathers of our country slip this into the Constitution so that they could be justified in going hunting every weekend? Or maybe shooting clay pigeons was the sport of choice? The point of the Second Amendment is to provide protection to Americans. Going back in history, we can see that there are instances in other countries that bearing arms was actually required. For Example, in 1181, King Henry II of England passed The Assize of Arms. It obliged men to bear arms. They had a duty to act in public defense.

What many people do not know is that the Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776 carried a longer version of our current Second Amendment. It stated this: "That a well-regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state; that standing armies, in time of peace, should be avoided as dangerous to liberty; and that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power." Here we have not only a right to bear arms, but the understanding of the importance of being trained to bear arms.

A firearm in untrained hands is dangerous.

It is our right to bear arms. It is our duty to be trained if we choose to exercise that right.
