The Kids Are All Right
Pam Burnett
So often we see that adults and our peers become nervous and high rung when put into a difficult or an unfamiliar situation. We often comment on them saying that these people lack in confidence to handle a new situation. But did you ever try to delve deeper into this situation to find out why exactly it happens?
The roots this problem can be found deeply and firmly grounded in our childhood. Many of us have had childhood full of problems. A few of us have also seen our family splitting because our parents could no longer bear each other. Single parent had the responsibility of running the house which often resulted in the neglect of the kids at home. This neglect often shows up in the form of lack of self confidence. But is there anything that could have been done? Well the solution was the same twenty years ago and is the same even today. Fill the kids with self confidence.
They have something to say, listen to them
Kids are so inquisitive about everything that goes on the world around them. They want to everything from how a bird flies to how an airplane flies. Our busy lifestyle has long since killed the inquisitiveness and the patience in us. Most often we just drive them away when they keep pestering us with their questions and often shouting at them without really meaning to hurt them
While it is true that most of us don't have enough time to answer every single question that they have, it would be a good idea to give your child a few hours exclusively on the weekend. This makes the child feel loved, wanted and important. Don't we feel good and confidence when some our bosses tell us that 'the organization (we work for) needs employees like you'?
But the kids just don't behave properly -
Children will always be children and they were not born with the lessons of behavior. Even you weren't. We were all born alike and learnt the lessons of life on the way. We learnt that good behavior is good and bad is not. But even if you misbehaved, it did not mean that you were a bad kid or that you would turn into a bad adult. Are you?
Be frank with your children and tell them that you still love them as much you ever did but certain of their habits or actions is what you don't like. Children over a period of time will realize what you told them and will set their actions and habits straight. They will also have a better self esteem because they'll know that they are doing the right things.
Praise them once in a while
Admiration is something that most of us give a higher place in our personal and professional lives than everything else. A compliment on a job well done by your boss will certainly make your evening and instill in you the much needed self confidence to perform even better. Similarly admire your children and praise them whenever they do or try to do something good for themselves or anybody else.
And as the saying goes, excess of anything is not good. While you should always recognize your child's efforts, you should also make sure that your praise and laurels don't put too much pressure on the kid. Just tell him directly that you appreciate the efforts and the results that he has achieved in whatever field that it may be, whether it be general education or sports.
Self esteem or self confidence is a very important trait and should be instilled in a child at an early age so that they can better cope with the pressures of the everyday world more easily when they enter adulthood.
