Tennis Ball Machine Review
Jeff McRitchie
Overview:
  • The Wire-1000 is a 3:1 pitch double loop wire binding machine produced by the Document Finishing Group (DFG).
  • It is an all metal binding machine that is specifically designed for offices and organizations that bind a few dozen reports per week.
  • With a price tag that is easy to swallow, the DFG Wire1000 is ideal for small and medium sized companies that are just getting started with wire binding.
  • Plus, this machine has a great set of features that makes wire binding both quick and easy.
  • Strengths / Features:
    • This machine has an excellent punching capacity, especially considering its price range. It is rated to punch up to twenty five sheets of paper at a time. However, it is best to punch twenty or less sheets at a time. Punching more than this can make pulling the punching handle quite difficult and can reduce the quality of the punched holes.
    • The Wire1000 is a 3:1 pitch wire binding machine that punches a hole-pattern with three holes per inch. This hole pattern can be used to bind documents with wire binding spines between 3/16" and 9/16" in diameter. It can also be used with GBC Proclick reclosable binding spines and with 3:1 pitch spiral coils. This can give you the flexibility to choose between several different binding styles for your organization.
    • This machine also has fully disengageable punching pins. It has an eleven inch punching throat for use with standard letter sized sheets. However, the disengageable dies allow the punch to be used with shorter documents. Plus, the Wire-1000 has an open punching throat so it can be used to punch longer documents using a two step punching process.
    • The Wire1000 also has a fully adjustable wire closer, a wire hanger and is made from heavy duty metal components that are designed to hold up over time.
    • Weaknesses / Limitations:
      • Although the Wire1000 does include a wire hanger, it is inconveniently located on the back of the machine. In order to use the hanger you will have to turn the machine sideways on your table or workstation. This makes the wire holder on this machine almost useless.
      • The control for the wire closer on this machine is a small dial on the side of the system. This type of adjustment does not provide as much control as a wheel or dual knobs. This may make it difficult to fine tune the wire closer in order to ensure that all of your spines close precisely every time.
      • This is a 3:1 pitch wire binding machine. It is compatible with three to one wire spines for binding documents up to 9/16" thick (approximately 125 sheets). Using this machine it is difficult to bind documents that are thicker than this. If your organization needs to bind documents that are thicker than 9/16" you may need to consider purchasing a different machine.
      • Recommendation:
        • The DFG Wire1000 is an excellent machine for a home office or a small office. It offers an excellent value for your organization's dollar.
        • The decent construction and feature set of this machine make it ideal for companies that need to bind a few dozen documents per week.
        • Larger users may want to consider a machine with a better wire closer control, a more conveniently placed wire holder or an electric punching control.
        • Still, this is an excellent machine for users that want to begin binding their own documents using double loop wire.
