The first and most often the most frequent problem people have when training their dog is inconsistency. People often overlook the fact that it can take a dog some time to understand even simple ideas. The truth is that they are first looking to find where they fit in. Because dogs have a pack mentality, they will try to first establish who is the pack leader. If you don't demonstrate that the leader is you, then they will assume that position. You first need to demonstrate that you are in charge with firm and gentle consistency. They have to know their place in the family. Once that is established teaching them becomes much easier. If you remain consistent in your efforts then you will be successful. Some dogs will pick things up quicker than others but you need to stick with it..
This ties in to the next issue which is being too impatient. In this society, we want instant gratification. If is not done right this second, then it is not worth the time. It does not work like that when it comes to to train your dog. Otherwise, you will get discouraged and probably give up after you finish potty training them. You cannot have an "I'm going to quit, this is too troublesome" attitude. In essence, once you have established that you are the boss they will want to obey your commands. It is just a matter of communicating your intentions to them in the right way. It is always a great idea to have some dog treats with you during the training as well. Dogs tend to think with their tummy. It may take a little time to get your dog to obey you correctly, but the results are always worth it.
The last thing you have to do is treat your dog as a companion. Only by working together, can you get things to work the way they need to be in your home. When you get irritated your dog will sense it and won't respond the way they should. This always makes it more difficult to teach them. You need to remember to show them love. If you establish a healthy relationship in the beginning it will bless you for their whole life. You have to see this as a mutual benefit for the both of you. Even though you are teaching them to fit into your environment, they will be more than ready to do what you want them to. All that is necessary is to do the basics such as potty training, no begging, proper behavior around people, and so forth. Anything other than that is for fun. If you desire to teach them some fun tricks then you have already started with a strong foundation of love and trust. When it is done, you will both be better off
