The Five Paragraph Essay
Sharon White
First section is your introduction. It is like an opening to invite the readers to read on and stay until the end of your article. Usually Introduction is very crucial to determine whether the reader would like to continue reading your writings or not. It is as thought the first impression of your article. If the first section appears to be sloppy, then the readers might mot interested in reading the rest of your article.
The introductory part should also include the thesis statement, a kind of mini-outline for the paper: it tells the reader what the essay is about. The last sentence of this section must also contain a transitional "hook" which moves the reader to the first section of the body of the paper.
The next section after the Introduction is known as the body. The first part of the body should contain the strongest argument, most significant example, cleverest illustration, or an obvious beginning point. The topic for this part should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory section. The last sentence in this part should include a transitional hook to tie into the second part of the body.
The second part of the body should contain the second strongest argument, second most significant example, second cleverest illustration, or an obvious follow up the first part in the body. The first sentence of this paragraph should include the reverse hook which ties in with the transitional hook at the end of the first part of the body. The topic for this part should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory section. The last sentence in this part should include a transitional hook to tie into the third paragraph of the body.
The third part of the body should contain the weakest argument, weakest example, weakest illustration, or an obvious follow up to the second part in the body. The first sentence of this part should include the reverse hook which ties in with the transitional hook at the end of the second part. The topic for this section should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introduction. The last sentence in this paragraph should include a transitional concluding hook that signals the reader that this is the final major point being made in this paper. This hook also leads into the last, or concluding, paragraph.
The last paragraph of your five paragraph essay is the conclusion. Before you call an end for your essay, you might need to make a restatement of the thesis statement which is the statements that the writers would usually made in the introductory of the essay. The restatement for the conclusion of your five paragraph essay, however, must not be a duplicate thesis statement.
