Teaching Children To Speak
Martha Satten
Teaching children to speak Spanish is a popular trend that is showing signs of becoming a relatively common practice in homes across the country. Many parents realize the growing importance of the Spanish language, and want to make sure that their children are well-prepared for the future by learning how to speak the language fluently.
The younger the child, the easier it is to teach them a second language. Young children have an amazing ability to absorb multiple languages because their brains store different languages in different compartments, unlike adult brains which cram all languages into the same one. That is why it is so much easier to learn to speak everyday Spanish as a child than as an adult.
And these days, it is very easy to teach children Spanish. There are all sorts of Spanish children's books, online tutorials, learn to speak Spanish audios CDs and other helpful tools that will have your kids chattering away in Spanish in a matter of months.
Of course, not every parent agrees that teaching a child a second language before they have mastered a first is a good idea. They think that young children who learn to speak everyday Spanish while they are still learning English can become confused have their learning abilities compromised.
Some parents believe that teaching children to speak Spanish will hinder their ability to speak English properly. The reality, of course, is that learning multiple languages at a young age actually improves a child's English skills, and bilingual children generally speak much better English than children that were never taught a second language.
Studies have shown that teaching children to speak Spanish has a very positive impact on their performance in school. Children with multiple languages are often more creative, possess greater problem solving skills and perform better academically than children with just one language.
Fear that their child's speech will be delayed by trying to process two languages is a concern voiced by many parents with young children. As there is no set time for a child to begin speaking, this really is not a valid concern at all. There is a possibility that it may take a bilingual child a little longer to start talking, but not by much. Children begin to speak anywhere from eight months to sixteen months, so even if it did take a child a little longer to process two languages before they started talking, there is plenty of leeway.
Bottom line, learning a second language at a young age can do nothing but benefit a child. And teaching children to speak Spanish really is easy with child-friendly interactive tutorials and learn to speak Spanish audio CDs. So find some good resources and help prepare your child for the future by beginning their Spanish lessons today.
