The town offers a base for visiting the nearby Snowdonia National Park.
It is a university town. Bangor also became the centre of higher education for north Wales with the establishment of the Normal College in 1862, the University College in 1884 and St Mary's College in 1893.
The beautiful Victorian pier is the second longest in Wales at 1,500 feet and offers a stunning view across the Menai Straits. Constructed largely in steel, with cast iron columns and screw piles.
Bangor allegedly has the longest High Street in Wales. It is the region's main cultural and shopping centre. The city centre has two modern shopping centres and a historic atmosphere on one hand and a modern shopping centre.
There are a number of pubs in the city of Bangor which are very popular with the students. The city is not lacking in restaurants and cafes and enjoys a vibrant night life.
Famous people connected to Bangor are Aled Jones who is one of those names that people all over the world will recognise and associate with Wales and singing, Angus McDermid and Sasha who has been at the forefront of the dance music scene since the 1990s
Penrhyn Castle was built by Thomas Hopper between 1820 and 1845 for the wealthy Pennant family. The stable block houses, a model railway museum an industrial railway museum and a superb dolls museum displaying a large collection of 19th- and 20th-century dolls. The grounds include park land, an extensive exotic tree and shrub collection and a Victorian walled garden.
Bangor Cathedral is a ancient place of Christian worship situated in Bangor. The site has been in use since the 6th century. It was founded in 525, more than 70 years before Canterbury Cathedral. The Cathedral has an excellent choir. It is small and it has no museum.
Bangor Football Club was formed in 1876 and based at Maes-y-Dref, Hirael, in Bangor. The teams' first choice strip is royal blue shirts, royal blue shorts and royal blue socks. The second choice strip is varsity red shirts, white shorts and white socks.
Bangor City F.C. is one of Wales' older foot ball clubs.
