Shopping for a gift has never been easy, but these tips have been designed to make it easier for you. There are three main factors to consider which will help narrow down your search for the perfect gift;
1. How long have you known your loved one?
This is important to consider because a gift expresses the emotion within a relationship. If you have known your loved one for a long time then you are in a better position to be able to tell what he/she likes at that particular point in time. Choose a gift that will have meaning to your loved one, something that will make your loved one know that you pay close attention to details in their life. If you have not known your loved one for long, buy something that is durable but not necessarily of immediate use, something that your loved one will keep for a long time and remind him/her in the distant future just how far you've come e.g. some jewellery, a book or a photo album.
2. What is the occasion?
The occasion for which you are buying the gift is also of importance. Valentines Day for example is for pampering your loved one! Some chocolates, a bottle of wine or a perfume are some ideas.
The point is just to spoil your loved one with whatever treat you know they will like. On birthdays and wedding anniversaries it would be more ideal to buy a durable gift. For Christmas buy something that your loved one will use such as tool, kitchen utensils, clothes or stationery. If there is no specific occasion then there is no general rule, it doesn’t really matter what you buy as it will be mainly a treat.
3. Nature of your relationship
Here you consider whether your loved one is related to you such as your family or is it just a friend or more than a friend to you. If it is family then you should be closest to them and therefore know best what they need most in their lives. For your siblings or parents buy something that they can use at school, work or generally in their lives. For a friend, just avoid sending the wrong signal if it is one of the opposite sex unless it is something they requested from you as that could complicate the relationship in the future.
