While there's no doubt that the art of photography has come along way since the digital camera was developed, despite all the progress that has been made there are still issues that act as limitations even in the digital world. Even with the most expensive digital camera available today there are certain techniques that any photographer should be made aware of that will increase the professionalism of any shot taken. One of the first techniques discussed usually in any photography class is called the dynamic range.

Of course the dynamic range adjusts itself differently for the human eye and this accounts for many pictures being taken that don't look the same when they go through a camera's lens. The human eye has irises that can adjust as we look at backgrounds of landscapes of varying brightness and in this way we are able to make out detail. Most cameras, even the latest digital ones, don't share this ability as well as our eyes. This doesn't mean however that photography hasn't taken steps to correct this problem. A filter has been used for years now that compensates for darker and lighter regions to give a uniformed exposure.

This technique doesn't work as well when moonlight comes into play or artificial light. However, to correct this problem digital cameras to have settings now where by they can make concessions. It becomes apparent after a short while that the digital camera does take a better picture than other more conventional cameras from bygone days, but there is still a learning curve with even this latest technology.

And even with the digital camera, there's a need for the human element to come into play as well. All the experts suggest that the difference between a snapshot and a truly moving picture is in the way the shot is framed. One of the concepts that is well known in more established photography circles is called the rule of thirds. This means that the best framed shots occur when the photographer imagines the shot as divided into three sections much the same as a tic-tac-toe game. When you frame the subject of the photo at the imagined points where these lines intersect, the result is a more artistic photograph.

When you take the time to choose an appropriate background, the result is usually a better photograph. If you find that you don't have a very good background, its suggested that you adjust your field of depth to blur the objects that are farther away and bring the ones closer into focus. Here's another helpful hint. When you're attempting to take a photo of something far away, its a good idea to have something close in the foreground that can imply distance.

Remember that simply owning a digital camera doesn't mean that you can just point and snap your way to great shots there are still many things that you'll need to lean to ensure that your pictures come out as professional as they can.
