Meet In Real Life
Jonathan Grant
One of the biggest reasons people give for going on online Christian dating sites is that it's hard to meet Christian singles in the real world. Non-Christians go to bars and nightclubs to meet people, but obviously that doesn't work for us. Since there aren't many Christian dance clubs out there, where do you go to meet other Christians? Here are some ideas for you:
1) Go to church. I know that sounds obvious, but the more involved you are in your church the more people you will meet. Get involved in a group around your age range and go to their events. Youth groups, singles groups, Sunday school, bible study, etc. I'm certainly not suggesting you go to a bible study just to meet women, God should be the reason you go. These are things you should be doing anyway. If you aren't, you can't really complain about not meeting people.
2) Be outgoing and make friends from different circles. As Christians, we are naturally a little cautious about the outside world ? especially girls! Hitting on a Christian girl that you don't know seldom works. Most couples meet either through some kind of a Christian organization (like church, school, etc.) or they have common friends. So, the more friends you hang around and make plans with the more ?circles? you are exposed to. Every time you meet someone new it's an opportunity to expose yourself to a brand new circle of friends.
3) Check out other churches in your area. I would never suggest leaving your church, as I'm aware that there are important doctrinal differences between denominations. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't check out other churches? events and groups. You never know who you'll meet there! If doctrinal differences are an issue for you, don't worry. Many people attend churches without even knowing the doctrine. You will also meet friends of the members there who might not attend the church themselves.
4) Travel. You aren't confined to just your town. Check out the larger cities/towns within an hour of where you live. There are plenty of churches within driving range you could check out. Each time you go to one, check their announcements and note any events or groups you might be interested in. Introduce yourself to everyone you can and find people you click with. Remember, the key is to be exposed to as many circles of friends as possible. Keep in touch with them and make plans to hang out with them in the future. Just because you might not be interested in dating someone doesn't mean you shouldn't get to know them. You'll get a good friend out of it - and you never know, maybe one of her friends is the man/woman of your dreams!
5) Find Christian colleges nearby. Assuming you are in your 20's, check out the private colleges and universities within driving range. Don't just hang around campus, that's creepy. See what community events are going on that you could attend. Many times there are recitals, programs, etc. you could go to for pretty cheap. Churches close to colleges have a lot of singles and usually have really good fellowship events you can go to.
6) Get involved in classes, clubs, groups, etc. Wanted to learn how to dance? Take a dancing class. Interested in pottery? Take a class in pottery. Like to paint? Join an art studio. Follow your interests and you'll meet people with similar ones. Not everyone will be Christian, of course, but some will. Check myspace events, yahoo groups, craig's list, etc. and see what is going on near you. You never know what you might find!
Whatever you do, don't forget to be outgoing and stay in touch with the people you meet. If you do this, you will be shocked at how many new people you'll end up meeting!
