Moving Back In With Parents
Rachel Yoshida
It takes a lot of years to get your children prepared to move out into the world and be on their own. It is so very hard to learn to let them go when the time comes, but it usually gets easier after they have been gone for a while and you get over the initial worry of them living off to themselves.
What you really may not be prepared for is when things go wrong enough in their life and finances that they end up having to move back into your home again. Many times it will be with a family in tow. As much as you may love your grown children and grandchildren, this can be a very stressful situation for everyone involved. There will definitely be adjustments to be made by all.
If your adult child that is moving back in has no job at all, it is going to financially straining on you. If the situation is bad enough, you or your adult child might consider applying for food stamps in order to ease the strain somewhat. Applying for food stamps will require filling out a lot of paper work and the help will probably not be immediate unless it is a real emergency. No one wants to have to get assistance like this, but it might be available to you and why not if it will help everyone involved?
If your adult child still has a job, it could mean that other than the stress of everyone living in one household, the circumstances might not be as bad as they could be. Your adult child may more than likely need to save up some money in order to be able to get back out on their own again. If you are in the financial position that allows them to be able to save all of their money this is great, but many times we are not able to support ourselves and another family as well. It can eat into money that you have saved for your retirement and hard times.
Make sure you allow your adult child to contribute whatever they can to the home. It might be in the form of money or it could just be by helping with the home responsibilities. They need to understand that this situation should only be temporary and that they need to do their part. It is rare that two family living situations work out well even when it is your own adult child. So the quicker the problems are remedied the better it usually is.
