Modern homes are not simply updated housing or using the most in-style and advanced building materials. Modern homes are a unique architectural style where form follows function. Therefore, modern homes lack outer adornment and decoration, preferring straight lines, sleek surfaces and square corners. So it would not be fitting to fill an outwardly modern home with ornate, overstuffed furniture and dazzling light fixtures.

A modern home should follow the same architectural principles on the inside as it does on the outside?form should follow function. Smooth metals, concrete and glass are often used in modern homes since they are very functional materials. These same surfaces should be incorporated into the interior of your home. Decorate with stainless steel kitchen appliances and countertops and use glass surfaced tables.

Since ornately curved furniture legs and rounded corners are not functional necessities, look for furniture that is straight, square and provides the most functional space for its purpose. Wall decorations should follow this same principle, incorporating straight lines, geometric shapes and depth through shading. Wall insets provide great function as book shelves, display shelving and even for an aquarium or entertainment devices.

Window treatments should not be billowing and decorative but should serve a purpose. If the window allows a lot of sun during the day, blinds which may be closed during summer days to keep the room cool yet opened in the winter for additional light may provide a functional yet aesthetically pleasing addition to the room.

Area rugs should only be used where there is a functional purpose such as in front of an outer doorway or where water may spill on the floor. An area rug placed in a carpeted room is strictly decorative.

While decorating the interior of your home, remember that to live in a modern home is to live in a piece of art. Therefore be creative with your interior space, making it as functional as possible for your daily routine. After all, form should follow function.
