Modern Wedding Anniversary Gifts
Thomas Pretty
Wedding gifts seem to be part and parcel of any wedding now. Giving the newlyweds a helping hand is in many cases a nice thing to do at the start of their married life, providing gifts that will be useful to for their household forgoes them having to spend a fortune on mundane items that they could easily receive as wedding gifts.
That is not to say that you will have to spend a fortune on a present. There are relatively cheap gifts that are just as big a gesture as the lavish gifts some people may buy; remember it is the though that counts.
Today however the situation is different, the tradition of giving wedding gifts to the couple was originally because couples had not lived together. The majority of those getting married today have already cohabitated for a number of years so the requirement for a multitude of household items has become null and void. By the time most couples have their wedding they already have all they require for there house.
That is not to say that wedding presents should be a thing of the past. There is always room for certain items that are worth giving as a gift. Specialist items are advisable and have long been part of wedding gift lists. For instance there are many couples I can name that still have the set of cutlery or a dinner set that was bought for them as part of the marriage celebrations, the fact these items are used rarely and have an emotional significance is part of the pleasure of giving a special wedding present.
A current trend is the production of a list of the wedding gifts that the happy couple desire. Although you may feel put out by being told what to buy, it is respectful to adhere to the couple's wishes. Added to this if they do not produce a list they may well end up with something that they have no need for. The gift will probably end up being stored away and will not see the light of day for thirty years. You want to buy the newlyweds something they want and will also treasure.
Strangely however the giving of wedding gifts to the couple is a relatively new phenomenon in most cultures. For a long time the giving of gifts went the other way round and guests received gifts called 'favours.' Although these presents were normally small trinkets given as lucky charms, one tradition was the giving of bags of almonds as gifts. The bag would contain five almonds representing fertility, longevity, health, wealth and happiness. The tradition is still carried on in the Middle East.
When considering what wedding gifts will be right there are a number of factors to consider. You want a gift that will be timeless; buying something technologically advance is unadvisable because it will be undoubtedly surpassed in the near future. Strangely items such as toasters are perfect as they are rarely technologically overtaken and act as a daily reminder of the couple's special day. Overall however you want something classy and refined that will be used on special occasions.
Ensuring wedding gifts have longevity is of vital importance. The gift should last well into the marriage a sign of the commitment the couple have made to each other. Picking the right present may seem a chore but making the perfect choice will enhance the couples special day greatly. With so much choice out there it may seem overwhelming but remember you are making this choice for someone who is either a close friend or a member of the family, both deserve your time and effort.
