Overcome My Fear Of Flying
Eva Marklund
?Karen closed her eyes and leaned back into the seat. As the engines started, and the plane started taxiing down the runway, that all to familiar dread completely enveloped her. The feeling of death being imminent. The powerless feeling of not being able to remove herself from what her mind perceived to be a life threatening experience. The feeling of total despair with her body shaking, sweating, and out of control.
Karen decided she would never put herself through this ever again.
Years went by and Karen drove many thousands of miles to family gatherings, reunions, and once to a job interview 3100 miles away?
Her fear was so strong, and, in her mind, (and most importantly) so justified, she never even sought help.
Then, in October of 2002, she won a very important award for her company and was expected to fly from Los Angeles to London to receive her honor, or she would face professional consequences.
It was fly or die. (professionally speaking)
After doing a lot of research, (after all, Karen's field is research analysis) she decided, even though skeptical, to try one of the new therapy methods born out of research into the bodies deepest levels. The Energy Level?
These therapy methods use points on the skin, scientifically proven to have an effect on the brain, and thus your brain chemicals, (the chemicals that causes you to feel afraid) while mentally tuning into the problem.
While it does sound strange and far out, clinical studies actually prove, with scientific methods, the difference in the brain before and after doing the therapy.
But let's go back to Karen and her situation?let's jump right into her session using Emotional Freedoms Techniques? (Widely recognized for it's remarkable efficacy for fears and phobias)
?Ok, Karen, what is the absolute worst thing about flying?? ?The feeling of being pressed into the seat as we accelerate down the runway. I just know there is no way out. I can't get off this thing.?
?Ah, so on a scale from 0 to 10, zero meaning no fear at all, and 10 meaning maximum amount of fear, or discomfort, what number would you get if you were to think about it now?? ?Oh, about a 9.5?
(Now, we find the words that Karen would use to describe the feeling/sensation, and we use those words as Karen is directed to tap on 9 specific acupuncture points- the result of tapping the points while focusing on the fear is a total neutralization of the fear.)
After tapping all the points Karen is asked to tune into the exact same scenario and rate her discomfort. ?Oh, about a 5.?
So it went from a 9.5 to a 5.
Karen and I went through the tapping again, with a slightly different set of words.
?OK, so now if you were t think about going down the runway, not being able to get off the plane,,,, how does it feel now, on a scale from one to ten??
?Uhm. I don't know?. It seems I can't find it anymore? I have a hard time focusing on it? ?OK. Good.
(This very typical by the way. The person having a hard time focusing on what just a few minutes ago sent them into sheer panic)
?So in your mind, briefly go through a flying experience and tell me anything that feels uncomfortable. Now, remember, we WANT to know if anything at all feels even a tad uncomfortable?
Karen went through the flying experience several times, each time finding a piece that felt unsafe, or frightening.
We applied the method to every single item, until the intensity was a zero. Together we "tapped" on the fear of being in an enclosed space, the fear of making a fool of herself by "freaking out" on the plane, the fear of turbulence, the fear of having no control, and the fear of ever having to feel such panic ever again...
Let's skip forward to the end of the session:
?OK, Karen, I want you to close you eyes and imagine the entire flying experience, from the point of thinking about the trip, getting the tickets, all the way through landing. Take your time, and if you find anything at all that feels anything less than comfortable, let me know.?
Karen is quiet for quite some time. Going through the flying experience in her mind. ?No, I don't feel anything that doesn't feel OK?
?OK, fine. Why don't you go through that again, and TRY to find something to get fearful about. Imagine bad weather- the plane tilting, dipping and free falling? imagine other fearful passengers screaming, imagine the worst case scenario?? I'm actually trying to find something to scare her about, to make sure we have not missed anything.
(To my knowledge there is NO other method that is so assured of success that they will actually TRY to make the client afraid to ensure that nothing was missed?
Most methods will have you focus on good feeling things, or to try to mentally avoid your flight, or to assure you that you have a support group on the ground tracking your flight, but this method is SO effective we WANT to have you search for anything still there that can possibly bother you when you fly, and then we will neutralize it, so that when you fly there will be NOTHING that feels frightening to you.
?No. It feels REALLY good.?
?Ok, fine?
After having Karen go through the flying experience again, asking her to really TRY to find something to be afraid about, and her not finding even one thing, our work is complete.
This is a very typical session to completely and permanently release the fear of flying.
Is it always this easy?
What you have read is a very typical session using EFT. Most cases of fear of flying can be completely resolved in l to 2 sessions or less. It matters not so much how long the fear has been there, or how intense it is. What can matter is if the person has many other fears, and a high level of general anxiety. In those cases, a few more sessions may be needed.
However, even those diagnosed with GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) can easily release their fear of flying. In most cases within 2-3 sessions.
With new modern and highly effective methods boasting success rates in over 90% of cases, there is no need for anyone to have a fear that is so easy to resolve.
