Outdoor Activities And Games
Andy Burrows
England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales each have their own distinct geographical characteristics and hence certain activities are regional and dependent on local conditions. Skiing, for example, can only be found in Scotland in the winter, while Wales and Northern Ireland offer some of the best coastal areas for sea-based water sports.
Whether they are land, sea or air based, outdoor activities in the UK enjoy popularity comparable with anywhere in the world. And with such a wide variety of geographical variations, there are few pursuits that cannot be undertaken.
Additionally, there are a large number of companies offering the means to facilitate outdoor adventures, be it for just a day or for an entire vacation period. Such companies offer all the equipment necessary and the expertise necessary for an adventure focused on a single pursuit or one involving something different every day.
Kayaking, abseiling, mountaineering and hang gliding are typically activities you might expect to be offered on an adventure holiday, while if you are an independent enthusiast with your own equipment, mountain-biking, rock climbing and gorge and fell walking can be followed relatively inexpensively and often without expert supervision.
Besides the more traditional activities that have long been a feature of the UK scene, there are a number of newer pursuits which are gaining in popularity. Bungee jumping, paint-balling, ATV and go-karting are just some of the activities which have become fashionable. Considered specialist in their nature, they require specific knowledge and equipment which eliminates individuals from pursuing them alone.
Most outdoor activities include some element of danger and for many; this is part of their appeal. For others, the risk is something they can reconcile by taking adequate steps to protect themselves. It is often the case that the company organising the activity has already done the same on your behalf.
While safety standards employed by activity companies are exceptionally high, accidents are inevitable and can not only ruin your holiday, but can leave you seriously out of pocket also.
Whether you are pursuing an activity through a recognised firm or independently, it's wise to have the safety net of a travel insurance policy which will ensure cover for any private medical expenses you might incur and for the damage of any expensive equipment.
In the past, for many, insurance was a luxury and something that could be considered an unnecessary expense, especially for a single day's activity. Things have changed however and travel insurance for any period, be it a day or a year, is considerably more affordable. Visit travel-insurance-discounts to see how easily and cheaply you can get cover for your adventures. Alternatively, visit vayago for policies designed specifically with adventure holidaymakers in mind.
