Amongst dog owners, the jury is still out on dog training schools. Many owners who have had dogs all their lives don't feel the need for a training school, feeling instead that their own training methods might be better. On the opposite side are those dog owners who feel it important to teach their dogs properly from the beginning and a dog training school is the only way to do so.
If you're not interested in dog training schools, then this article is not for you ? or maybe it is especially for you. If, however, you are interested in using a dog training school, this is definitely for you and please read on. Even while you have decided to use a dog training school, it doesn't mean you just go out and find the nearest one or the best price. Different schools can specialize in different types of training or training for different types of dogs.
But, before you start trying to find a suitable dog training school, the first thing you need to know is that the school is not the complete answer to training your dog. Training goes on throughout a dog's life, though you're doing the right thing by starting early and using a training school. The thing that most people underestimate about training a dog is the amount of day-to-day time it takes. You need to devote time everyday to training your dog, even if you have used a training school. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be a lot of time, 15 ? 30 minutes a day, but it should be consistent and separate from other time with your dog, including walks. It is especially important to devote the time when your dog starts training because the sooner you develop good habits, the easier future training will be and the less need you will have for training schools.
Another thing you should be prepared for when training your dog, which can be helped somewhat by using a training school, is the ongoing nature of the training. Many owners, particularly the less experienced, put in a lot of time when they start training, but, once they have accomplished what are to them major achievements, like getting their dogs to ?sit? and ?go? outside, they relax the regimen and stop training. Of course, using a training school will open their eyes to just how long is the training process ? a lifetime. Without a training school, when owners stop training their dogs, it can be the start of a variety of problems that can become increasingly difficult to correct or overcome as time goes on. Be prepared, whether or not you use a dog training school, for the need to train your dog throughout its life.
Having a well trained dog does not hinge on using a training school. Of course, many dog owners are excellent dog trainers and they never use a training school. However, if you are a first time owner, or have had any issues with training a dog in the past, you should consider a training school. Sometimes we think we have a well-trained dog, but, on closer examination, it is the dog owner who has been well trained by the dog. Behaviours that become acceptable to the owner, like jumping up, or intermittent barking, are unacceptable to others. The owner has accepted the bad behaviour out of frustration with training or ?love? for the dog. These sorts of behaviours are very difficult to correct and using a dog training school might be an owner's best option.
Another issue that can arise from owners training on their own, and of which they could also be unaware, is overall poor training. Dogs are pack animals and, as such need a clearly defined leader in their pack, which is the owner and his or her family. If there is no clear leader in the pack, it is a dog's natural instinct to assume the role of leader. So, if owners don't properly establish themselves as leader in the eyes of their dogs, they might never properly train their dogs. They will blame the problem on a difficult to train dog. In addition to training dogs, a good dog training school trains owners in the best ways of establishing leadership.
