Second Hand Smoking Facts
Jessica Donnovan
Anyone who has ever been a smoker for any length of time will know just how difficult it can be to quit smoking. However, those that are fortunate enough to have the ability to reflect back onto the days of when they were smoking can now say, "I can't believe I didn't quit sooner, what was I thinking".
If you are considering quitting smoking it will not be easy, but let me tell you that there is not a single recorded benefit of smoking, not a single one. You probably already know that smoking does not make you feel any better it will actually make you feel worse in most cases, smoking tends to take time away from other more important things like work and family, or even having a little fun and of course continuing to smoke cigarettes will more than likely shorten your life span which in turn will give you less time to spend on this Earth with the ones you love doing things that you actually enjoy.
If you are tired of coughing up a lung first thing in the morning or running out of breath while walking up the stairs then maybe, just maybe its time to consider quitting smoking once and for all. Put that smoking in the past and find out what foods really taste like, what it feels like to jog through the park and how nice it is to have your significant other want to kiss you. More often than not, the easiest way to stop doing something is by hearing what exactly the risks and complications are, which is exactly why I am sharing these facts about smoking.
Some Random Facts About Smoking:
1. For each person that dies from a smoking related disease, at least twenty more people will have at least one serious illness from smoking.
2. Smoking not only harms the person smoking, but also his or her family members, coworker and anyone else that might breathe the cigarette smoke. This is called secondhand smoke.
3. Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the U.S.
4. The health care costs that are associated with exposure to secondhand smoke average $10 billion annually.
5. In the U.S. alone, smoking is responsible for approximately one in five deaths each year. That equals about 438,000 deaths per year just from smoking.
6. Throughout the World, smoking causes more than five million deaths each and every year.
7. Plain and simple, smoking is an addiction and it can be far worse than any other drug simply because tobacco is readily available. Cigarettes contain nicotine which is a very addictive drug that can make it very difficult, but not impossible, to quit smoking.
8. A teenager with parents that smoke is twice as likely to become a smoker than one thats parents are non-smokers.
9. On average, many smokers will die thirteen to fourteen years earlier than non-smokers.
10. The current smoking trends show that tobacco use alone will cause more than eight million deaths annually by the year 2030.
11. The Nicotine from a cigarette reaches the brain in about eight seconds, while injecting many street drugs such as Heroin takes twelve seconds.
12. Each time a person smokes a cigarette, their heart speeds up from 10 to 20 beats per minute.
13. On average, a person that smokes one pack a day will spend around $1500 each year on cigarettes alone, what could you do with the extra money?
14. Smoking is responsible for around 25% of deaths from residential fires, causing nearly 1,000 fire-related deaths and 3,300 injuries each year. Those numbers are in addition to the amount of deaths caused by smoking related illnesses.
After reading all of those smoking facts are you feeling like quitting smoking might be a good idea? They are pretty astonishing right? The truth of the matter is that no matter what anyone tells you or says, you have to want to quit, and it is not an easy journey, I wish it were. Its up to you to make the right decision, try weighing the pros against the cons, I assure you that smoking will lose. Good luck!
