A follow up "rough" guide to bars in Murcia City.

Going for a drink in Murcia is great fun if you're British.

If you like you can do the ?Brit? thing (Go out at 8.00p.m. and be back home by

12.00 ready for some kip) it's more interesting to try to be ?continental? in Murcia. Most places in Murcia don't liven up until around 12.00a.m. so you'll miss out on most of the amosphere if that's the way you choose to go.

Here's a useful tip: To get the best out of your evening in Murcia City change your body timer to a Spanish night out by altering your watch by an hour. Don't consider going to a "real" Murcia bar before 10.00pm. Earlier on, if you want to be around the place why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (Cathedral Square) and admire the beautiful Cathedral. from the terrace. Then you couldamble down to the Hotel Rincon de Pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a cocktail in the "La Muralla" bar, one of the last remaining places in Murcia where you can still see the remains of the city's original Arab walls.

Los Cuatro Gatos (12 Calle Alfaro.) is next to the Roman Theatre. Here we have live music and sometimes features comedians on stage. Nice place this.

Gospel (15 Enrique Villar. Tel. 968 203 234) The young crowd hit this lively city centre pub. The music ranges from

Blues to Rock to Jazz. Stays open until 3.30am.

Mundaka Club (26 Carretera Santa Catalina.) Maybe the most buzzing club in Murcia, playing

Seventies disco and dance. Three rooms with different sounds that provide something for most tastes. Fridays and Saturdays are from 2am-6.30am. (See what I mean about coming out later?)

El Mentidero (3 Saavedra Fajardo. Tel. 968 223 533) Trying to escape from the techno music in all the Spanish clubs then El Mentidero is the same as the rest. It's a fun bar with a dance floor and is open till 3am. It's adjacent to the

University.

La Codiga (Gran V'a Alfonso X ) More of a Spanish bar this. Latin rhythms are the speciality in this club.

Leather trousers and chest wigs are optional ;-)

Sala Univesal (1 Avenida Juan Carlos.)A blatant and lively bar - a well known bar in Murcia. There are several rooms playing

different sounds so something for most here...

DNC Dance Club (Puerta Nueva, Edificio Centrofama. Tel. ) This place claims to be the only true club in Murcia city centre. Located in the busy university zone. Buzzing place during term time. DNC plays house music and standard pop against a backdrop of trendy d'cor. Free drink with your entry fee.

Tasca Gao (17 Calle Canovas del Castillo.) Off the wall bar that specialises in miniature bottles of spirits (duh.. my head..) . Regular target for people on hen/stag parties in fancy dress at weekend.

Fuente Alamo (Carretera N301, Fuente ?lamo.) Unusually for pubs in Murcia this is a Western themed bar with

cowboy outfits and saloon-style bars. It's actually a really good night out if you're in the mood for a knees up!!.

Kennedy Bar (Callej'n de Berruezo.) Lively Irish bar that's popular all day. Get down here for some Guinness and English soccer. Good range of other ales also. They have live comedy shows on

Wednesdays. Buy one get one free on drinks when soccer matches are showing.

Super 8 (Avenida Ciclista Mariano Rojas, Local 16, Molina del Segura.) Just a short way outside the city, Super 8 is an chilled out

bar/club which features a live band each week. It draws a youngish, mainly indie type crowd and opens from 12.30am-6.30am

La Puerta Falsa (5 Calle San Mart'n de Porres.) Nice relaxed bar with music

from local talent. Also has really good exhibitions of paintings on the walls.

Utopia (7 Vel?zquez.) This is an unusual place and is described by the owners as a theatre-bar. The interesting d'cor imitates theatrical scenery. Utopia has all kinds of acts on stage ranging from actors reading monologues to musicians and small rock bands. After the live stuff it's mainly Brit-pop, rock and blues.

Kallejon (Calle Ceuti, Poligono Insustrial Atalayas) Most of the clubs in Murcia are on the outskirts due to noise considerations. Kallejon is no exception. We have two dance floors featuring Commercial Techno stuff and Spanish pop. Opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (very late).

Royal Palace (17 Carretera Santa Catalina.) Royal Palace is open until4am. This vast place is part of a complex that holds up to 2,000 guests. the music is aimed at thirty somethings but inevitably, Latino rhythms dominate.
