Phlebotomists are trained to draw blood for laboratory tests and blood transfusions, and are essential components of the medical profession. A certified phlebotomist, particularly in a fast paced environment, like the growing San Diego health care job industry, provides a valuable service, by reducing the workload of other medical professionals and allowing client intake to proceed quickly and more efficiently. Phlebotomists primarily draw blood from patients for testing purposes, but can also draw blood from newborn infants, and some, but not all, are trained to collect arterial blood samples.
Phlebotomists are also authorized to administer Saline or a Heparin flush, which requires additional training and can lead to a Phlebotomists being hired as a Kidney Dialysis Technician. Phlebotomist training opens the door for many varied career opportunities. Because of the growing awareness of the importance of this skill, most Phlebotomists undergo some type of formal training, which can include four months in a trade school or a year of community college courses. Among other things, phlebotomist training includes CPR, anatomy, patient interaction legal issues surrounding the collection of blood, Universal and Standard Precautions, and techniques for blood collection. Requirements vary by state, with California being the only state so far to require an official certification. Extensive clinical hours are a requirement in all states, however, as well as the ability to work well with all different types of people, in many different types of stressful and high pressure situations.
Phlebotomy has been practiced since the time of the Greeks, when modern medicine was in its infancy. In the Middle Ages, phlebotomy techniques became intermingled with the practice of bloodletting, or exsanguinations, which at the time was believed to have healing and cleansing properties. When the practice of bloodletting was discontinued, it was still necessary to draw blood from patients for medical purposes, and phlebotomy became recognized as a valuable and essential skill.
Phlebotomy is not only a valuable skill that can lead to advanced career opportunities, but its a highly sought after skill in many cities. Phlebotomists are important members of any medical team, and their expertise and efficiency go a long way in making the medical care process better for all concerned. When you are searching for a San Diego healthcare job that will have a direct, positive impact on the lives of thousands of people, requires minimal training, and can lead to a more lucrative job down the road, look no further than a career as a phlebotomist.
