Over the years, I have been both the coach and the client. In both roles, I've found some strategies that helped me and my clients get the most out of being coached. Follow a few of these simple rules and you'll find your growth excel beyond your wildest dreams.
*Be present on the journey itself
As a Personal Life Coach, I've found that clients are most resistant to just being on the journey. They have their goals in mind, but get frustrated when the road takes a sudden turn. They are so caught up in their expectations of what should happen as a result of their actions, that they've forgotten the power of just taking actions in service of their intention and simply seeing what happens. After all, we're in charge of what we do, but not what comes of it. Be open to wherever the journey takes you.
*Allow yourself to see all of the benefits of the work you're doing
When you work with a Personal Coach, there is no straight line to reach your goals. We usually like to think of it as being on a journey with many twists and turns and many times there are blocks in the way. Clarity and awareness are two very important tools to have in order to get what you want out of life. So when you're in a session and can't figure out why you keep talking about something mundane like your frustration with laundry, just go with it. There's always something underneath that will help you get where you want to go.
*Complete the Work your Life Coach Gives You
I can't begin to tell you the number of times my clients put off doing the homework I assign them. And I did it, too, when I was coached. Here's what you need to know: the amount of energy you put into doing the work indicates the level of investment you have in yourself. Do you do your homework but just enough to make the coach happy you did it? You'll only get half of the result you want out of your growth. Do you forget to do the homework or just decide to not do it at all? You'll get out of it what you put into it: nothing. I learned to be thorough in my homework and not only did I feel better about myself, I achieved my goals much faster!
*Show up fully for your coaching sessions
Would you rather be focused and attentive and reach your goals in 10 sessions with a coach or would you rather pay a coach for 20 sessions because you are distracted during your time together? It's your money. It's your time. It's your life. What's important to you? Would you like to reach your goals quickly or take your time? What are the benefits of being fully present in your life?
